In our first grade we use many math games to supplement our math program.  Two of our favorite styles are dice games and "bump" games.  Both styles can be adapted to virtually every math concept we study in first grade.  To play the dice game, each child has a game sheet that can be colored, and a set of dice.  Sometimes I use dotted dice, other times I use number cubes (dice that have numbers instead of dots).  I also program blank cubes with other things, such as number words.  One child tosses the dice, and adds/subtracts/reads the outcome.  Then, based on the outcome, he/she colors a picture on the game sheet.  Each game sheet has multiple pictures with numbers underneath.  For example, if we're playing an apple game, and they are adding, they'll use two number cubes.  The game sheet will have pictures of apples with numbers 2 through 12 written below.  If a child tosses the dice and the sum is 6, he/she colors the apple with the 6 under it.  Then the next student goes.  If a child rolls the dice and that sum is already colored it, he/she skips a turn.

To play the "bump" style of math games, children again work in partners.  This time they have only one game sheet to be shared between them, instead of each having their own as in the dice games.  The children need dice as well as a set of same-colored chips, cubes or any game marker.  The partners must have different colors from one another.  One child rolls the dice, adds/subtracts/reads and then places one colored chip or cube on the picture with that number.  Then the next child rolls.  If he/she lands on a number which is already occupied with the partner's color, he/she can "bump" the partner off and place his/her colored cube there.  The kids love this!  If you roll the same number twice, you can place two of your colored cubes on the picture and now your partner cannot bump you off!
